Research Summary:
Under Chinnaswamy Tiruppathi, PhD, I studied the regulation of the calcium channel TRPC1 in
endothelial cells. When there is increased calcium inside endothelial cells, the cells contract and
increase the endothelium’s permeability. I found that TRPC1 was inhibited by a peptide based on the
sequence of the caveolin-1 scaffolding domain. The development of such an inhibitor can help treat
diseases such as septic shock and acute lung injury.
